the South African Way

Lee and Caryn van Deventer

My hubby and I are two South African's who met each other in the state of Utah...of all places. Then to top it off we were blessed to win a greencard! . Miracles happen! So now we get to stay and experience life in a new and exciting place, with different adventures and blogging all about it!

Come to Arizona they said.....

So I am sure you are all wondering how the water heater fiasco turned out...well Lee organized for a new one to be installed on the Tuesday. We were very excited for a long awaited hot shower, but unfortunately we had to wait a little longer. That night we realized the new water heater was still leaking water all over the garage floor, so Lee called the company and explained the problem. As it turns out, every year they usually have 2 dud water heaters from the manufactures, and guess what...ours was one of those duds. Just our luck. The next day we had another new one installed and finally were able to have the joy of a hot shower restored to the van Deventer family.

They say things come in three's, well I am waiting for the third because last week we experienced the second disaster since the water heater. I have been driving Lee's car to school lately, and we have replaced all the cooling pipes to anticipate the heavy work that it will be doing when cooling the engine in this heat. (It was 38 degrees Celsius yesterday, and we are in Fall now...so still pretty warm) So we are driving to gym the one afternoon and next thing you know there is that terrible smell of burning coolant again! We open the bonnet and cooling fluid is everywhere, for the second time this year. All I could do was laugh because at least this time we were not in the middle of the desert waiting for a tow truck. (For those of you that haven't heard the story, we had a cooling pipe burst on our way driving down to Arizona, it was definitely one of those disastrous, funny experiences. If you know what I mean.) This time it was the radiator, it seems the first time they repaired the cooling pipe they tightened it onto to the radiator too much and it cracked. So now that we have replaced the radiator, we are waiting for number three...

As for school, it has been a busy couple of weeks, but I am half way through the semester so yay! I haven't had too much time in the cadaver lab lately as we have been focusing on embryology and learning how the cardiovascular system is formed, including the heart. I should be back studying in lab this week.

We are getting excited as we are getting closer and closer to signing the deal on our first home. Hopefully next week we will have some good news and officially become first time home buyers :-)

Wishing everyone back in South Africa a happy heritage day!
