Week 4 of med school was something else, I tell you. Lee had to return to Utah on a business trip so I was left in Arizona to hold up the fort. To start off this wonderfully disastrous week the water heat broke! OK not the end of the world since it is over a 100 degrees everyday, a cold shower is not so bad for a couple of days. Well it has turned into a 10 day fiasco and we still don't have a water heater.
As Lee was not around this week, I decided that it would not be the safest idea to have someone come look at it with just me and mini in the house. This, as well as the greater chance of someone ripping me off, led to a week filled with cold showers everyday after being in lab with the cadavers.
On a side note, the cadavers have been a lot less intimidating than expected. My cadaver happens to be a little heavier, and so removing all the fat has been an extremely good motivator to eat healthier (haha, but no seriously everyone should eat healthier). So far we have dissected the back muscles, the spine and then the front chest area. On Friday, we opened the thoracic cavity and dissected the lungs. So all in all it has been a good experience, even though most of the time at this point I am completely lost and frustrated with all the terminology. There is an overwhelming amount of information that you get all at once and have to piece together. People were not joking when they described med school as drinking from an exploding fire hydrant.
Anyway, back to the disastrous week. I had an exam on Monday, which went well, and then had a couple of extra classes this week, so I tried to run home as often as possible to check on mini. Mini is still extremely anxious when left home alone in the new house, so I picked up a bottle of calming tablets to help us through the week. I tripled the dosage and she is still as stressed out as ever. The one day she locked herself in the laundry room, went crazy and when I got home everything that was on the shelves was now on the floor.
During my busy schedule, I must have missed the pool guy who comes and cleans out the pool once a week. Because on Wednesday, when I popped in for lunch there was way too many pamphlets hanging on the door form the city. Apparently, allowing pool water to run into the street is extremely environmentally damaging. So much so that there is a $2500 fine for doing so. Thank goodness we were just given a warning and Lee was able to smooth it over with the city, but we are pretty sure the next door neighbor called the city complaining about it since it wets his gravel. Seriously ridiculous.
On Thursday, I arrived home and went through my usual schedule by first taking mini to the park. Once parked in the parks parking lot, a tow truck driver pulls in behind me and blocks the car in. Mini is now barking like crazy so I walk up to him and ask: "Can I help you with something?" And he tells me, oh I just need to check the VIN number on this car. So I wait patiently, thinking in my head that this is not good. Then he tells me he is looking for a white Nissan just like this car, belonging to a person in our neighborhood. And then asks me where I live? At this point, I am thinking I am not telling you where I live. I grew up in South Africa, I won't fall for that. So I say, well just around the corner. And he goes yes in.... and rattles off our address. By now I am like oh I definitely need Lee back, I have a tow truck driver following me and he knows where I live. Panic. Then he starts explaining how the people next door to us should have a white Nissan that he is looking to tow ( I am assuming for repossession purposes). So I explain that, that house is empty and I have never seen a white Nissan there. He says OK I am going to drive past a verify that. Lets just say mini and I drove around the block a few times, until he had left our street and then I drove the car straight into the garage and locked all the doors. LOL
Thank goodness, Lee headed home the next day after having a couple of his own problems during the week. Like getting a flat tire on the highway, soon as he got out and started changing the tire all of a sudden it started a heavy downpour, unfortunately he was left on the side of the highway, soaked in the rain changing his tire. Soon as his tire was changed the downpour stopped. As well as the car battery completely dying and needing replacing. It was definitely one of those eventful weeks filled with excitement. When it rains it pours..... On Lee.... ha ha
Anyway Lee arrived home and I was very happy to see him. On Saturday, he checked out the water heater and called someone in to take a look at it. Since it is a long weekend, and everyone has taken off to enjoy the end of the summer, we waited till about 5pm until someone came out. They delivered the bad news, of needing to replace the water heater completely. So we called our friends, who own the place to get the go ahead. Unfortunately, since it was so late Saturday, the first opportunity there is to have a new one fitted is Tuesday. This means absolutely no possibility of a shower for the whole long weekend, not even a cold one, since the water heater was drained in preparation to fit a new one.
So this morning, I headed to campus like a really fancy hobo, carrying all my shower goods. And took a long, hot shower in the gym room. Haha. And Lee, claiming it is so hot he is going to turn into a Lee-ish kebab, has been jumping in and out of the pool. It has been a real fun week. Here is to hoping next week goes slightly smoother and includes a new water heater!
Love to all
